Our history

Our organization is named after Mocha Celis, a travesti from the province of Tucumán and compañera of the travesti-trans activist Lohana Berkins in Buenos Aires’ Flores neighborhood. Mocha was assassinated by police gunfire in circumstances that were never made clear. She had never completed high school.

Mocha’s story is that of many travesti, trans and non-binary people. For that reason, in 2011 we created the Travesti-Trans Popular High School inspired in the words of the late Lohana Berkins:

FROM

2011

LOHANA BERKINS

“When a travesti enters the university, it changes her life. When many travestis enter the university, it changes society’s life.”.”

Over the years, we have expanded our reach, creating different actions and programs that seek to integrally guarantee all of the rights of TTNB people, promoting a full and dignified life.

The Mocha Celis was legally registered in July 2020, the first non-profit organization created virtually in Argentina. Later, we shared our learnings about this process so that colleague organizations could also achieve their legal status.
